Last year HMRC announced that there will be changes to the VAT treatment of temporary workers supplied by employment bureaux to take effect on 1 April 2009. Where the bureau has in the past been allowed to charge VAT only on its commission, in future the full amount paid by the client will be charged. For customers who can't recover VAT, that's going to be a big increase in cost.

Some of the big users of temporary staff - insurance companies and banks - have been making representations to the Government that this is not a good time to bump up the cost of employing people. They made the same protests last year and were not heeded - there has been no reaction this year either.

If you use or supply temporary staff, make sure you are aware of the changes that are coming. We can help you to prepare for them. Or keep your fingers crossed for a last-minute reprieve in the Budget!
